David Silver
David Silver grew up as a competitive horseback rider in Westchester, NY and graduated from Dartmouth College in 2012. He moved to Detroit through Teach For America and taught 4th and 5th grade from 2012-14. David then stepped outside the classroom and started Detroit Horse Power, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that teaches Detroit’s youth valuable skills through riding and caring for horses. Current programs bring youth from the city to partnering horse barns outside Detroit for summer camps and a growing after-school program, while preparing to repurpose vacant land in Detroit for a transformational urban equestrian center.
Urban Equestrian Education Center
Detroit Horse Power is preparing to reactivate a demolished Detroit school site by constructing an urban equestrian education center that will be home to year-round youth development programs and bring community-focused development to underserved neighborhoods. This project will integrate the history of both the property where our facility will be built as well as the history of horses in Detroit into crucial place-based displays that embed the legacy on which we are building into this unmatched new asset for our community’s future.
